Learn how to use the Meaningful Outcomes Treatment & Assessment Scale (MOTAS) to evaluate functional skills across meaningful areas of daily life and translate assessment findings into practical, socially significant treatment goals. This course reviews the purpose and structure of MOTAS, including its approximately 1,200 measurable skill items across 20 functional domains, as well as the role of LOOP interviews, direct observation, structured probes, and record review in developing a more complete picture of current performance.

Participants will learn how to interpret patterns in acquisition, independence, generalization, and maintenance rather than relying on a simple mastered/not-mastered approach. The training also addresses how to incorporate client, caregiver, and professional perspectives, prioritize high-impact domains, distinguish meaningful needs from low-priority skill gaps, and select goals based on quality of life, client voice, safety, dignity, feasibility, opportunity, and generalization.

The course emphasizes translating assessment needs into observable, teachable, and defensible goals that work in real-world settings. It also covers common assessment errors, documentation considerations, role boundaries, compassionate implementation, and the importance of planning for durable outcomes that maintain across people, settings, routines, and time.
