BCBA CEUs: Frequently Asked Questions About Continuing Education for Behavior Analysts

To become a BCBA, you must meet BACB eligibility requirements (via an approved pathway), submit an application through your BACB account, and take and pass the BCBA exam. After you’re certified, you must maintain certification by meeting continuing education (CEU) requirements, following BACB ethics and self-reporting requirements, and recertifying every two years.

Most people follow this sequence: (1) complete the required graduate education/coursework under a BACB-approved pathway, (2) complete required supervised fieldwork, (3) apply through the BACB, (4) pass the BCBA exam, and (5) maintain certification with CEUs/ethics and recertify every two years.

BCBAs work in many settings and roles, including clinical supervision and treatment planning, school consultation, early intervention, caregiver and staff training, organizational behavior management (OBM), program development/quality assurance, research, and behavioral consulting for agencies or businesses.

A BCBA credential is not a counseling license. However, a person can hold both credentials if they separately meet the licensing requirements for counseling in their state. If you hold dual credentials, it’s important to stay within each scope of practice, clarify roles for clients, and avoid conflicts of interest/dual relationships.

In schools, BCBAs commonly support teams with functional behavior assessments (FBAs), behavior intervention plans (BIPs), data systems, staff training and coaching, classroom behavior supports, skill acquisition programming, and collaboration with IEP teams to improve student outcomes.

ABA-based strategies can be used to address behaviors and skills often related to ADHD (e.g., routines, task completion, reinforcement systems, organization, on-task behavior, and replacement skills). ABA is not a “cure,” but it can be a helpful part of a broader support plan when individualized to the learner and coordinated with medical/educational providers as appropriate.

BCBAs must complete 32 CEUs within each 2-year recertification cycle.

Within the 32 CEUs, BCBAs must complete 4 Ethics CEUs. BCBAs who supervise (RBTs/BCaBAs/trainees during the cycle) must also complete 3 Supervision CEUs. A CEU can count as ethics or supervision, but not both.

For BACB CEUs, 50 minutes of instruction/learning equals 1 CEU (and 25 minutes equals 0.5 CEU). CEUs are based on time in qualifying continuing education activities and must be documented appropriately.

Use the minutes-based conversion: total qualifying minutes ÷ 50 = CEUs. Example: 100 minutes = 2.0 CEUs. For teaching a CE event, the same time conversion applies based on time spent instructing.

BCBAs recertify every two years by submitting the recertification application (with fees) and meeting CEU and ethics/self-reporting requirements by their recertification date.

The BACB may select CEU entries for audit during recertification. If selected, you may be contacted to provide additional/clear documentation showing you met CE requirements. Keeping organized CEU documentation throughout your cycle is the best way to prepare.

The primary way to verify certification status is the BACB Certificant Registry (updated daily). For written verification, the BACB also offers a verification letter option. Employers and funders commonly use the Registry to confirm current status and any reportable disciplinary actions.

Use clear service agreements, define professional roles, keep communication professional and documented, avoid conflicts of interest, and follow your organization’s policies and the BACB Ethics Code. When in doubt, consult supervisors/ethics resources and document decision-making.

Common warning signs include role confusion (friend/therapist), special favors, excessive out-of-session contact, sharing overly personal information, gifts beyond policy, social media boundary drift, or making exceptions that you wouldn’t apply to other clients.

Set expectations early, use written policies, review boundaries periodically, seek peer/supervisor consultation, document decisions, and build “pause points” (e.g., do not respond emotionally or outside policy—step back and consult first).

At the start of services (informed consent/service agreement), whenever roles change (e.g., adding supervision, new settings), and anytime you notice boundary risks (e.g., increased personal contact, gifts, requests outside scope).

Self-assessment helps you catch bias, identify competence gaps, and notice patterns (e.g., burnout or boundary drift). It strengthens clinical judgment by prompting you to slow down, check data, consult ethics standards, and choose a defensible course of action.
